ABSTRACT

This chapter bridges the knowledge and practice gaps between mental health providers and yoga practitioners who work with clients suffering from disordered eating. Combining the wisdom of 20 experts in eating disorders treatment and yoga practice, it shows how and why yoga's mind-body connection facilitates treatment and recovery. Yoga's mission is to wake us up to our true selves, to the beauty already within, to move us from separation to connection, from contraction to spaciousness, and from fear to acceptance. How it does that, of course, depends on the needs of the person it serves. Dissolving an eating disorder is not an overnight experience. The process involves seeing, feeling and experiencing oneself in a new way. For anyone suffering, know that after enough new breaths, there can emerge a new, recovered, authentic one. After enough new breaths, joy founts up, where experience changes constantly, and people can move from darkness into light.
