ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses specific strategies to help treatment professionals start integrating yoga and keep it as a vibrant element of treatment and recovery. Eating disorders bring a profound disconnection from body, creating a perfect emotional storm of fear, anger, anxiety, frustration, resistance, flashbacks and more. With the right teaching approach, yoga is a powerful recovery force in multidisciplinary treatment. When integrating yoga into treatment, it's important to recognize and communicate the parallels between the methods and goals of yoga, psychotherapy, nutrition, medicine, and other elements of client care. Yoga teachers must work from a non-reactive stance, providing clients with a living, breathing and moving counterpoint to the highly reactive state of their eating disorder. Eating disorders are multifaceted problems unique to each person and the illness is a master of disguise. An effective yoga teacher cares about the client and can differentiate between the person and the products of their eating disorder.
