ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. There are many instances when people have to consider the relation of gender and the media as intersecting with class, age, ethnicity and sexuality. The concept of gender is important in forming people perceptions and appreciation of pop stars and the music they produce. Blog posts on the subject support this notion when pointing out that male rock stars are very rarely called a 'coked-out whore'. There are many things to be considered regarding Lady Gaga's feminist or anti-feminist identity. News media fell over each other to have their best critics write analyses on the Gaga-phenomenon. Most international academic organisations on media and communication like the International Communication Association, European Communication Research and Education Association, and the International Association for Media and Communication Research each have a gender division.
