ABSTRACT
This paper is written in defense of a few platitudes, the basic platitudes of our civilization. These platitudes are harder to accept and to defend than many of their sincere supporters have recognized. They are thus not really platitudes at all, but-shall we say?—‘plongitudes’ disguised by their own prestige. As this becomes obvious they may regain their rightful place at the heart of philosophical discussion.
