ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the deployment for teaching assistants (TAs) who is predominantly based in classes, year groups and subject departments. It explores the various options and decisions that arise from your decisions to deploy TAs in non-pedagogical and pedagogical roles. The chapter explores each in turn in more detail, following some guidance on deciding your staffing structure. The best way to provide such guidance is to develop a school policy on TA deployment. Using the blank page approach, you will be able to establish a broad set of TA roles, which are distinct from one another and from the role of teachers. The retrofit approach involves first confirming the levels at which your TAs are working. The chapter suggests that a growing number of schools have addressed TA deployment to such an extent they have turned around, or are beginning to reverse, the main effects of TA deployment identified in the DISS project.
