ABSTRACT

The development of the task and the application of the rubric should be considered an iterative process with the final combination of task and rubric evolving over time. Holistic rubrics are designed to capture the overall quality of a student's performance on the task. A developmental rubric is useful for a school in which students have mathematics portfolios, and may be helpful in charting progress over time. Teacher collaboration in the scoring of student work using a rubric offers a great opportunity for professional development. Collaborative scoring sessions can easily be set up among teachers at a grade level. That aspect of work with rubrics is described, which may be used productively even with elementary students. In mathematics, an essential criterion almost always concerns mathematical accuracy. Some state departments of education and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) have also created prototype rubrics.
