ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative-inspired pedagogy called Hoodwinked that was designed by Ron Tooth and his colleagues at Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre (PEEC). The Hoodwinked story is one of hope, trickery, danger and betrayal that imaginatively engages modern day bush kids in a journey through time to rescue Miss Dove, the original bush kids, and the rare birds at Pullen Pullen Creek. Hoodwinked is a program offered by PEEC, which is situated on the western outskirts of Brisbane on the grounds of the original Pullenvale State School. The Hoodwinked excursion allows students to touch, handle and use a wide range of material artefacts and objects as part of an extended problem-solving investigation. The centrepiece of the Hoodwinked experience is an excursion to PEEC where students step into the lives of John Bird and the original bush kids of the 1890s as they attempt to solve a difficult environmental problem.
