ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a vision of place pedagogy as shifting sands that contrasts with the foundational notion of pedagogy as providing the basics and being solid and explicit. The materiality of the seaside and shifting sands at Nudgee Beach creates a rather different notion of knowledge and pedagogy. The program culminated with Nudgee Beach Centre staff working in the school to consolidate the students' learning and to design innovative ways to present their insights to the whole-school community. The tides and the ever-changing intertidal zone create the learning affordances at Nudgee Beach. The melding of cultural, ecological and historical knowledge of the staff with the ever-changing and shifting nature of the natural systems that make Nudgee Beach a powerful context for learning is not something that has just happened by accident. The shifting sands of the beach provide the basis of the pedagogy at Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre.
