ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance and nature of career development as part of leader development and talent management. It explores the balance between organizational and individual responsibility for career development. Inkson and Gunz and Peiperl explore the varied ways of thinking about what a 'career' is, and how careers develop. GSK is a science-led healthcare company that researches, manufactures and makes available a huge volume and broad range of medicines, vaccines and consumer healthcare products. Nestlé is a global nutrition and health company, headquartered in Switzerland and with about 350,000 employees worldwide. Nomination for Enterprise Talent is through the company's established talent processes, supported by business leaders and HR and then endorsed by the Corporate Executive Team. Traditionally, senior leaders in the UK Civil Service were 'generalists', with their career experience mostly in policy work. The UK Civil Service employs just fewer than 440,000 people across 24 main departments and over a hundred agencies and public bodies.
