In the main council chamber of his Basman Palace in Amman, King Hussein of Jordan faced the assembled leaders of his kingdom. The tension in the room was electric. Newsmen and television crews from the Western and Arab worlds mingled with the 6oo invited notables, who came both from East Jordan and the Kingdom's Western wing, occupied by Israel since the Israeli victory in the June I967 war. All had been told to expect an announcement of 'major importance,' affecting the future of Jordan and perhaps of the entire Middle East for many generations to come.
