ABSTRACT

Now that Israel occupies the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of the Jordan, guerrilla warfare has taken on a new menace. There is now a substantial Arab population under Israeli rule. This new million provides a latent civilian base for Arab guerrilla fighters, a factor which gives them much greater hope than before June 1967. Improved prospects for guerrilla warfare combine with an increased determination to wage it. The security situation on the West Bank has been a serious problem for Israel, as evidenced by a number of bomb outrages, including one in Jerusalem in November 1968 and by numerous demonstrations against Israeli rule. The Israelis seem quite able to contain the situation at present, but they are clearly worried. This chapter gives excerpts from the 1967 and 1968 UNWRA Reports and an excerpt from an article which examines the problems set for Israel by her occupation of the West Bank.
