ABSTRACT

This chapter explores social consequences that follow from the acquisition of goods, thus tracing the links that market exchange gives rise to at one remove, so to speak. It expands on starting points for studying market ties at one remove, as well as on how have done so. The chapter offers an account of the practical consequences of acquiring a classic car, which offers a rich source of observations concerning possible consequences of possessive relations. It discusses a number of themes that emerge from the account and expand on these using other observations of effects that follow from the forging of possessive relations. The chapter makes some concluding remarks on the sociality of markets from the perspective of studying possessive relations. It leads to the interactive forging of associations between entities triggered by possessive relations rather than describe a structure of social ties surrounding consumption.
