ABSTRACT

Flexibility, adaptability, and creativity are aspects that are vital in regards to change. These qualities will help the change to be successful and productive. Being flexible is often very challenging. Giving the impression that people are flexible is a key leadership skill. Research suggests that one of the most important traits of an effective leader is adaptability. Dr. Ann Hart, President of the University of Arizona, shares how novice leaders can deal with that pressure: Pressure to make change is indeed uncomfortable, especially in organizations and institutions accustomed to social support rather than task orientation. Judy Vredenburgh, Director of Girls Inc., shares her thoughts on creativity and adaptability in respects to effective leadership. She states that the capacity to provide creative solutions to novel problems can be important in some leadership roles: Since change is constant in many sectors and industries, demonstrating an adaptive capability to changing conditions is often necessary for effective leadership.
