ABSTRACT

The agendas are structured to build participant Social and emotional learning (SEL) competency from Self-Awareness to Self-Regulation to Social Awareness and to find the balancing between Self-Efficacy and Social Harmony. Teacher competency is a part of the successful implementation of a school-wide SEL program. If classroom teachers are expected to implement SEL programs and state SEL standards with efficacy cannot be assumed. Mindful Practices, has been providing high-quality professional development across the country since 2006. Implementing an intentional and reflective professional development program is the key. A "one-shot" train-the-trainer PD session is not enough, as there is only time to cover particular SEL strategies, not to evaluate the practitioner's overall mastery of the concepts. Intentional professional development gives teachers the space to view themselves through the SEL lens. The role of the facilitator is of utmost importance for a successful professional development session, it is their job to create an emotionally and physically safe space for learning to take place.
