ABSTRACT

Intentionality is a key to create an impactful classroom Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program. The mindful set-up of the classroom environment is a critical piece in the program's success, as it creates a safe environment in which learning takes place. Once the classroom has been set up, it is important to take the time to walk students through their daily routine prior to starting instruction. To model the strategies for the students, demonstrate how to perform a morning check-in, use an activity in the POP Chart, and add a sticky note to the Boom Board. At multiple points throughout the day, the teacher asks the classroom for a "Thumb Check" to check with students and gauge their energy. Scripted lessons for introducing SEL are the morning check-in, the POP Chart, Boom Board, and other components of one's classroom. Taking the time to pre-teach the concepts and create a safe space for learning is essential to the success of any SEL program.
