ABSTRACT
How do people of Latin American descent remember their history and maintain their culture in the United States? For many this is a challenge. But with the arrival of so many people in the last quarter century, and the natural growth of the community, we are seeing an unprecedented influence of Latinx culture in the United States. For the Latinx community, these are essential tools of our collective history. They are not tools indigenous to the Americas, nor are they exclusively Western; they are universal and significantly contribute to the telling of history. Because public history is found in both private and shared spaces, it is often used for cultural preservation. Much has been written about Spanish and Mexican heritage sites in the United States. One of the exceptions to this is the field of Borderlands history, which seeks to view the region and the people who live there from a cross-border perspective.
