ABSTRACT

Insulation resistance testing should take place during the installation's construction stage, mainly to confirm the integrity of the installed cables, more so with large installations; and re-tested as part of the Initial Verification procedure. Live test: For safety reasons, a live polarity check on a final circuit or an installation should be conducted on completion of the full test sequence, normally as a functional test, and the instrument used is an approved voltage indicator. This chapter focuses on Selection and Erection of Surge Protective Devices (SPD). SPDs are fitted near the origin of an installation to prevent dangerous sparking/arcing, which can lead to fires or electric shocks. Protective SPD do not provide effective protection against failure of sensitive electrical and electronic systems. The testing procedures for a Periodic Inspection are similar to that of Initial Verification testing, the testing sequence does not necessarily have to be identical simply because the installation is already operational.
