This is likely to be the most divisive of the major cleavages in Israeli society. Support for the ma:ximalist position which calls for retention of the Golan Heights, all of the west Bank and Gaza, has grown steadily since 1967. The Likud and the smaller parties that advocate the ma:ximalist position together won 57 seats in the 19 84 elections. When the right wing of the Labor party is taken into account, the ma:ximalists appear to be a slender majority.
