ABSTRACT

Some were won over with promises of alliance. Others were defeated in war or yielded when a

Macedonian army appeared on their borders. Eventually, Athens, Thebes, and the Theban allies

decided to fight Philip in battle. After a crushing defeat at the Battle of Chaeronea (Kai-ROH-

nee-uh) in 338 B.C.E., all of Greece was under Macedonian control. In 337 B.C.E., Philip proposed

the invasion of Persia, gathering together a large army of Macedonians and other Greeks.
