ABSTRACT

Pen name of Liu Baozhen. Dan Ying was born in Malaysia, but her parents were originally from Canton. She is considered Singapore's best woman poet writing in the Chinese language. Zhong Ling, in her study of modern Chinese women poets in Taiwan, has noted Dan Ying's classicism and feminine style of lyric poetry. She also commented that her Taiji poems are a good example of her classicism, which evokes a vivid world of ancient martial arts that at times is 'heroic, tragic and at time humorous'. Dan Ying's first volume of poems, Ten Thousand Farewells was published in 1966 and was followed by One Man Lane, The Poems of Taiji, and Years Upon the Hair.
