ABSTRACT
Conquest, colonization, and exploitation became the pattern in Spanish America. Explorers would enter a new territory with their muskets, horses, and elaborate uniforms. This usually awed the native population and assured a peaceful welcome for the Spanish. They would claim the land for Spain, and then begin taking whatever they wanted, particularly gold and silver. Generally, the commander or another officer would receive an encomienda in the newly defeated area.
