ABSTRACT

Cash Crops in the South The success of Virginia tobacco led to the development of other plantation crops, such as rice and indigo. Like tobacco, these crops required vast acreage and careful tending. The low country of South Carolina and Georgia provided an ideal environment for rice cultivation. Planters started experimenting with it in the river swamps

around Charles Town, 50uth Carolina. The first harvest produced 330 tons, which was exported to England and the West Indies.
