ABSTRACT

In a dignified, stately manner, Imperial Commissioner Sai-shang-a entered the city of Guilin on the fourth day of the sixth lunar month, 1851. The political and administrative center of Guangxi province is now the city of Nanning, but in the Qing dynasty, the capital of Guangxi was Guilin. The provincial governor resided there, and his office was situated where a soccer field behind the Li River Hotel now stands. The city walls were built facing the Li River. It was Guangxi Governor Zou Minghe who welcomed Imperial Commissioner Sai-shang-a at Guilin, though Zou had just arrived himself. Sai-shang-a had hoped to meet Jiang Zhongyuan in Guilin, but Jiang was going to be arriving a bit later than planned. By way of precaution, the two men conveyed the rumor to Liwen that the military forces of the Society of God Worshippers had already passed Xiangzhou and were heading toward Guilin from Liuzhou.
