ABSTRACT

Tashi Tsering received a phone call early in January 1994. The voice on the other end of the line informed that if he could get himself to Beijing he would find a ticket waiting for him at the United Airlines office and a visa at the United States Embassy. Fortunately his good friend, Mr. Wangchuk, agreed to take charge of his school-building projects, because at the time he was in the process of negotiating for some high-quality building materials for the next schools. The arrangement was that he would again be based at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he would continue to help Professor Goldstein on a new edition of his Tibetan-English dictionary. For a month he will be in Beijing, where he plans to study for a few years before beginning to work to build socialism, democracy, and happiness in Tibet.
