ABSTRACT

The action unfolded at the Trinity Cathedral, where in the presence of the highest nobility, officialdom, and generals the Senate awarded Peter the titles "Emperor," "Father of the Fatherland," and 'The Great." After a festive church service the text of the Nystadt peace treaty was proclaimed. Trumpets sounded, kettle drums and military drums thundered, the dense smoke from the cannon salute blanketed the bastions of the Peter and Paul and Admiralty fortresses, and the 125 vessels of the Russian fleet stood in the Neva (we recall Pushkin: "And the Neva is shocked afar by the heavy firing"). When the salute's echo and the cries of "Vivat" subsided, Peter addressed those present with a speech that he had carefully prepared beforehand.
