ABSTRACT
We opened this book with a broad comparison of the evolution of Indian and Chinese civilizations from ancient times to the beginning of the modern period, on the grounds that considering the stark contrasts between these two great traditions would help the reader better understand the unfolding of Indian history. Now that we have completed our survey of the modern period, it may be useful to compare contemporary India and China.
