ABSTRACT

As more businesses rely upon information systems to run almost every facet oftheir business, the potential costs of employee Internet abuse is rising. Last year alone, industry analysts estimated that billions of dollars in lost revenue were attributed toemployee Internet abuse, and new trends suggest that lost productivity and corporateliability have emerged as new workplace concerns due to such cyberslacking. This chapter reviews the corporate costs associated with employee Internet abuse and presents acomprehensive framework for risk management. Specifically, the chapter outlines current business practices that employ both information technology and human resourcesdepartments in controlling Internet abuse and corporate online management strategiesfrom policy development to software monitoring and management training.
