ABSTRACT

A growing body of literature has raised concerns over employees’ online activities in the workplace. Regardless of the terminology used to describe the problem, today’s employers, managers, and human resources professionals face the challenge of understanding and handling employees’ problematic Internet use (PIU). The current chapter attempts to shed light on the issue of PIU in the workplace by offering a theoretical account of the cognitive and behavioral processes that give rise to Internet use that results in negative personal and professional outcomes. The chapter presents the cognitive behavioral model of PIU and reviews literature supporting some of its major claims.
