ABSTRACT
Brazil is the largest country in South America in terms of land mass, economic activity, and population. Unlike most countries in Central and South America, its official language is Portuguese—a holdover from centuries of Portuguese rule. After achieving its independence in 1822, Brazil was led by largely by military regimes. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Brazil was finally promulgated in 1988 (CIA 2013).
