ABSTRACT

The geographical unity of Eurasia means that the eco-domino process on Soviet territory constitutes a kind of expansion toward the Western countries. The effect of the ecological deterioration of Eastern Europe and the former USSR on Western Europe influences the form and magnitude of global climatic changes. Yet the eco-domino process possesses its own forms of influence, which can be no less powerful than global eco-problems in deciding Europe's future. In 1987, a group of Serbian physicists demanded cancellation of contracts signed with Western companies for construction of atomic power stations in Yugoslavia, on the grounds that the society was ill-prepared to handle dangerous high technology. Even if Western Europe curbs its economic growth, and makes every effort to save its environment, in such crucial parameters as sea level, water management, and forestry wood supply, it will find itself on the brink of disaster by the year 2030.
