ABSTRACT
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that in 2004 there were 562,000 social workers in the United States, a number that seems high in light of the fact that there are only 442 accredited bachelor’s and 148 master’s degree programs in social work. The BLS also estimates that 16.5 percent of community and social services occupations are unionized.
