The income “pie” in the United States exceeded $13.8 trillion in 2008.1 If sliced equally among the over 300 million residents (U.S. Bureau of the Census [USBC] 2007c), each man, woman, and child would have received nearly $46,000. A fourperson household would have had an income of nearly $184,000; a pretty decent standard of living.
