ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the crew rowing within the pertinent theoretical framework of coordination dynamics, alongside some recent empirical work in this context. It provides the crew rowing as an archetype of interpersonal coordination dynamics, and the interpersonal coordination dynamics research provides means for the example of crew rowing to now surpass the stage of mere metaphor. The chapter describes the essentials of the sport of crew rowing that investigated crew coordination in rowing. It presents the well-established non-linear model of coupled oscillators, known as the Haken-Kelso-Bunz, or HKB model, that captures key properties and phenomena of iso frequency coordination. This chapter discusses the point by point fashion the main predictions derived from the model, how the predictions are supported by previous empirical findings, and how they may apply to crew rowing. It illustrates the relevance of coordination dynamics for investigating crew rowing.
