ABSTRACT

The Curriculum Review Committee of the School District of Clayton, Missouri, during the 1991–1992 school year studied all of the major reports on scope and sequence (National Commission on the Social Studies in the Schools, Bradley Commission, National Council for the Social Studies, California Framework) and examined the course sequence of many school districts both locally and nationally. We have developed a sequence that is conservative in certain respects yet bold in conception. It reflects the thinking and spirit of the most recent critiques of the social studies in this country. At the same time, it offers some exciting and unique approaches to our discipline, especially at the elementary level.
