ABSTRACT

I would like to thank all the participants for their insights and honest criticisms. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Taiwanese audience have learned much from the perspectives of the distinguished scholars and policy makers. We have gained a better understanding of how Taiwan is viewed by other countries. I hope the guests have also learned about Taiwan's frustration in trying to enter the international community and about the DPPs position. We recognize that Taiwan is already a de facto independent country. Even when the DPP comes to power, we will start with the simple reality of de facto independence, but we will pursue legalization of de jure independence through peaceful methods. That is why we have held this conference to ask the participants to give us their wisdom and opinions so that when the DPP comes to power, we will better understand what we should do to become an independent country step by step.
