ABSTRACT

Mongolia has rapidly implemented a series of reforms designed to create a competitive market economy based on individuated private property. So far, however, most Mongolians have seen a marked decline in their standard of living. Mobile pastoralism remains the basis of the rural economy of the country, but it has undergone rapid change as a result of the dissolution of the collective and state farms.
