Was the publication of Sandakan Brothel No. 8 an invasion of Osaki’s privacy? This question tormented Yamazaki, as she began to piece together Osaki’s story. She submitted the manuscript to a large publishing house. The editor assigned to her work made so many changes that he had in effect rewritten the book. Some acquaintances encouraged Yamazaki to accept the changes just so that she could see the book in print. Acquiescing to their advice, she called the publisher. Then, her true feelings emerged. She was furious. Instead of giving the editor permission to print his version of her book, she demanded that he restore her manuscript to its original form, and return it.
