ABSTRACT

To celebrate the turning of a new millennium, I initiated a cross-disciplinary symposium at Emory University on diverse approaches to reconciliation. As the then-provost of that institution, which is home to a leading school of theology and linked to the Carter Center, discussion of this topic seemed an appropriate way to begin the twenty-first century. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath brought the conversation about political and cultural reconciliation, in particular, into sharp relief.
