ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the broader community involvement of nonprofit organizations using the two surveys by Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) and the Nonprofit Housing Provider Survey, conducted by the authors. Surveys were conducted of CEDAM members in 2003 and 2007, primarily to identify areas of training needs and other membership services that provided by CEDAM. The activities span social services, health services, youth development, and community organizing. There are several activities common among nonprofits into the social service or economic development categories. The 2007 CEDAM survey offers a relatively similar picture of nonprofit community involvement across the state, although new activities were added to the survey after 2003. Faith based organization (FBO) decreased their social service activities in the areas of day care and crime prevention programs, although increases are evident for the other types of social services. The Nonprofit Housing Provider Survey provides a slightly different assessment of the broader community activities of nonprofits in Michigan.
