It’s one of the first things you learn about government as a kid-legislatures make the laws. Whether it’s at the national, state, or local level of power, we’re taught early on that legislative bodies are the embodiment of the people. And why not? These units are collections of people with roots close to ours. Members of the other branches just seem removed from our daily lives, but legislators are people we know. They’re the folks who went to our schools, attended our religious institutions, and worked in our communities before moving on to their elective offices.
