ABSTRACT

None of the other states and few nations are as diverse as California, where diversity seems to be layered on diversity. From race and ethnicity to income and class; from varied economic interests to competing political ideologies; from geographic region to rural, suburban, and urban interests within regions; from labor unions to lawyers to Indian casinos—diversity is a joyous if sometimes fractious fact of life in California. And every element of that diversity is expressed through organized interest groups.
