ABSTRACT
The importance and benefits attributed to performance measurement have been highlighted throughout this volume. Documented efforts to measure the performance of public organizations span over a period of at least one hundred years. Yet, the implementation, or actual use of performance measurement information appears not to be as pervasive as one might have hoped. This chapter highlights the advances that have been made in developing theory that supports the practice of performance measurement.
