ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to the proposition that organizational homogeneity is a frequently overlooked organizational dynamic that is steadfastly pursued by those in charge who prefer a loyal and dependable workforce that supports their management style and world view. It also explores a quality of organizational life that has a very real presence in the conscious and unconscious experiences that drive us. This chapter has addressed the very real experience of boundaries that create inclusion or exclusion. The process of selecting in and out contains a subtext, one that creates a more homogeneous work force within sections, departments, divisions, and the organization as a whole. Human resources must defend its schema of positions and payroll in the face of constant demands by other divisions to hire better employees and pay them more. Psychologically, the experience of anxiety is a signal that a threat exists. Organizational boundaries contain a rich complexity more befitting the notion of an experiential surface.
