ABSTRACT

The World Trade Center, including the two massive towers, was part of an urban renewal scheme in the 1950s. Brothers Nelson and David Rockefeller were the chief supporters of the project, insisting that it would help bring commerce and positive influences into lower Manhattan. The Pentagon occupies nearly thirty acres, and has resulted in many local building projects, including highways and bridges. The building is like its own city, complete with shopping and restaurants. Efforts to redesign and replace the World Trade Center began as the enormous task of cleaning up the site was still under way. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation worked to sponsor an international design competition. One of the country's most impressive government buildings, the Pentagon was designed as a five-sided fortress for the War Department, today better known as the Department of Defense. The offices are numbered clockwise wise for each ring, and the offices are also annotated by their proximity to a corridor.
