ABSTRACT

The gods set off in all four directions from the heaven of Tamoanchan to find food. They traveled across the Earth for days, searching high and low, but they could not find anything suitable. Then one day, the god Quetzalcoatl spotted a red ant carrying a kernel of maize. Quick as a flash, he transformed himself into a tiny black ant, and followed the red ant deep inside the mountain. To Quetzalcoatl's astonishment, the ant led him to a chamber filled to the roof with piles of seeds and grain. Quetzalcoatl picked up some of the kernels of maize and carried them back to Tamoanchan, where the gods were waiting. As Quetzalcoatl watched them going about their daily tasks, he noticed that they never danced or sang. They needed something to raise their spirits, and Quetzalcoatl thought that he had the very thinga delicious drink that they could all enjoy.
