ABSTRACT

The family I had now become a part of could trace their history for many generations. Their caste was Kayastha. Chitra Gupta of swarga [the heavenly sphere] is said to be the original ancestor of all Kayasthas. He emerged from the body of Brahma the Creator to transcribe the deeds, both good and evil, of mankind. It is according to these deeds that judgment is meted out to them by Yama, the god of Death. As the Brahmin was born from the head of Brahma and the Kshatriya from his arms, the Kayastha, coming from his body, is said to be endowed with the wisdom of the learned Brahmin and the strength and courage of the Kshatriya race. Traditionally, the Kayasthas have been civil servants and administrators, and the Mazumdars conformed to this pattern.
