ABSTRACT

Dear Hacker, 1 February 13, 1953

I want to tell you that your personal attack at the Civil Liberties panel on individuals who disagree with you on the employment of Communist Party teachers as "Savanarolas," who presumably wish to bum books and people, as men "who are inviting the McCarthys and Congressional Committees to our campuses," represents an unscrupulous misrepresentation of their position, and a deliberate resort to abuse instead of argument. I say "deliberate" because nothing could be clearer than the dissociation which Marshall, Norman Thomas, Jack Childs,2 Lovejoy, I, and numerous others who hold this position have made from those who believe in suppressing dissent. Long before you decided to add your voice of opposition to McCarthyism, the individuals whom you maligned had sounded the alarm in numerous articles and speeches.
