ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of strong ethical culture organizations, top management, and boards of directors, middle managers, and the organization's value systems in restoring ethics consciousness to organizations or the workplace. It then discusses the role of ethical leadership, creating a climate for whistle-blowing, and providing a forum for dialogue and moral conversation in restoring ethical consciousness to the workplace. The chapter is concerned with doing the right thing, and that means increasing our understanding of what leaders can do to increase the likelihood that their organizations will not stray from doing the right thing. Ethics matters in business because all the internal and external stakeholders stand to gain when organizations, groups, and individuals seek to do what is right, as well as to do things the right way. Strong ethical culture organizations are built on the premise that leaders must constantly find ways to ensure that unhealthy or unethical cultural characteristics are identified and eliminated.
