ABSTRACT

As the descriptor attached to her name implies---bishojo (beautiful young girl) senshi (warrior}-Sailor Moon represents both a different kind of girl--one who fights and is herself a hero rather than in need of one--and a different kind of warrior-a beautiful female. Her marketers have found these differences to be successful; Sailor Moon has been the top-ranking television show for its production company, Toei, outranking all its programming for boys (including the Japanese version of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). Further, by the mid-1990s Sailor Moon had been successfully exported to eighteen countries worldwide.
