ABSTRACT

Leadership, broadly defined, is the ability to get others to behave as the leader wishes them to behave. Leadership is thus a key component of all organizations. Organizational functioning depends on people within the organization working toward goals that benefit the organization as a whole. There are many processes and structures that enhance organizational functioning, but in the final analysis, organizations succeed or fail because of leadership, and they cannot function well without effective leaders. This does not mean that all good leaders will be visible in their capacity as leaders. Leadership means different things in different situations, and sometimes the most effective leader is one who appears not to lead in any active sense.
